Our Annual Picnic

President's Message

 

Hello to our website visitors. The San Diego Prowlers are now well into our 71st year.  It is August and it's hot even in San Diego. This was our first Summer since the early '70s that we haven't staged our annual

"Picnic and Ol' Timers Reunion". It really feels good to relax a little and have time to drive our hot rods and maybe even work on them a little. 

As promised we are reinventing ourselves back into "doing whatever we want" for a change and leave the event planning to promoters who enjoy that stuff!

 

We are still the unchallenged "oldest hot rod club" continuously corrupting young men since 1947 so please dig in to our webpages and visit the hot rod club that has been there the whole time. See the men, cars and their hobby from post WWII to the present that was the laboratory of power and style that helped shape today’s automobile.

My love for cars has been with me forever.  I remember my first car was a 1950 Chevy pick-up I bought at a County auction.  It was orange with black fenders and had more dents than I had ever seen.  But it was mine.  I worked on it for many months.  I got it to run and then I sanded it all by hand, primed it and painted it metallic blue.  It look pretty bad but I loved it because I had done everything.  Many years later (like now), I wish I still had it to play with.

 

As I grew up, I realized that cars could be even greater fun.  In fact they are the source of many happy times for me.  One thing I am particularly proud of, is that I was able to help start the San Diego Automotive Museum.  As the founding President, I stayed on to help guide it for two more years.  Then I realized that I wanted to do more with cars in a 'hands-on' way.

 

I got active in a car club and just fell in love with Henry Ford's famous Model-T.  I have owned 5 T's over the years.  The first three were full-on restorations.  I had a 1923 Model T 'Run-about'.  Then I had a 1925 Model T 'chopped top' pick-up.  The last non-hot-rod was a beautiful 1927 Model T touring which I used to great joy with my son and daughter when they were young.  We often took it to parades and picnics.

 

At one car show I was really taken by the Model-T roadster hot rod.  I had seen the 77 Sunset Strip TV show and knew about the 'Kookie Kar' that Norm Grabowski had modelled for the show.  But to see one close and personal was a real treat.  Then I started to see them often.  Well, I just had to have one. 

 

My first T-bucket (as I learned they were called) was purchased from eBay sight-unseen.  I got it right and had it shipped to San Diego.  I spent the next year redoing much of it.  It was Corvette yellow (not too subtle) and it sported a large polished 6-71 supercharger with two big 4-barrels.  It was quite a monster.  I later learned that it is a very good thing to check the operation of your brakes before taking it out for a cruise.

 

 

 

My next T-bucket was one with great history. I was able to obtain a great hot rod built by Fred Castro. It is candy maroon in color with great diamond-tuck black leather upholstery. It has a black fabric top and a full built Ford Cobra 289 with a rare factory manifold with dual quads.

 

Life is great when you have a hot rod!!
